Can early detection of MRSA prevent large sores?

Here's the deal: My mom was diagnosed with a MRSA staph infection last week. She let the sores get nickel-sized before seeing the doc, who drained them and put her on an antibiotic regimen. This morning, I woke up to what looked like a nasty mosquito bite on my forearm. I also have a what seems like a badly clogged pore on my upper shoulder. It's kind of hard. Anyway, doc took a sample for the lab and put me on some antibiotics, and ointment. My question is this: if I got it early enough, can I avoid the large sores my mom got?
