Why do they put ambiguous spelling questions on pre-employment exams?

I always wind up writing "trick question" when they ask me for the correct spelling of a word that has multiple spellings. If I'm writing a letter to the offices in London, I write 'authorisation', if its in New York, 'authorization'. When will they stop wasting an applicants time? And isn't such a question culturally biased anyway?
